Linocut Seminar »Façades«

Master/Bachelor WF

on Monday 4 pm
registration via seminar bazaar

introduction on Monday, October 16th, 2023 at 4 pm, Gallery Parkhaus (room 177)

submission on February 5th, 2024

Prof. Katharina Immekus
M. A. Kai Ruhland

The many linocuts made by students in recent years prove that no artistic-graphic technique lends itself so excellently to the representation of different structure as the linocut technique. When we think about how to play on and create a surface, we automatically divide the total space available into smaller and larger fields.

A facade has openings, a material to be represented, perhaps balconies or glass in which something is reflected. There is a plinth to be created or a recessed upper floor, entrances, sunshades, etc. Finding a graphic expression for all of these individual parts and cutting them out of various sized panels is the goal this semester. Together with the image seminar, which will deal with the analog visualization of balconies, we will possibly develop a joint exhibition and an accompanying exhibition booklet towards the end.

“I believe that a material is inherently imbued with its function.”

Daniel Turner, artist

Architecture makes use of various resources to build something. The materials used for this purpose have an origin and a social meaning, as well as a structure all their own, which is decisive for their texture. Next to this is nature, which has to deal with the material we use. Together they form an image that shapes perception.

For this seminar, we explore the invisible or the less obvious in the material. We are looking for other perspectives and sensitize the view on it. It is to be documented, inspected and individual components are to be worked out. Through various analogue representation techniques, the fragmentary components are to be translated into two-dimensional images.

The purpose of the seminar is to develop a publication in the sense of a material study. This will open up a space for viewers to rediscover material and be inspired for their own projects.

Gallery Seminar »The Allotment«

Master/Bachelor WF

on Monday 6pm
registration via seminar bazaar

introduction on Monday, October 16th, 2023 at 6 pm, Gallery Parkhaus (room 177)

submission on February 5th, 2024

In addition to the various exhibitions that the gallery seminar conceives and oversees as usual, this semester we are looking at the character of allotment and the small houses that go with them.

Allotment in a large city are there to allow the urban population to garden and get together in the fresh air on weekends and during free time. Owners and tenants of allotments usually design the houses standing on the plots according to their taste, they “curate” their open spaces, which is why a walk through an allotment garden site can also be very fun and enlightening.

We would like to build the huts for an allotment with you, in addition to the gallery exhibition program, and think about what creating your own garden means. Apart from the semester theme, this semester all artists at Galerie b2 in Leipzig will be exhibiting one work each and we are planning an exhibition with works of the students from the last semester.

Balconies are the outdoor area of our home, the extension of our living space. Especially in cities, residents attach great importance to the few meters of access to the air that the balcony provides. The outdoor space, which can be reached from the interior, forms the interface between the private and the public. The balcony is particularly effective in a picture. The many small spaces and areas that stand out and show on the facade create interesting light and shadow situations, which are worth looking at more closely and depicting in analogue form. We will look at some beautiful examples of images and talk about how balconies can be painted, drawn, and cut, and talk about why they are such effective picture elements.

Magazine Course »Blueprint«

Master/Bachelor WF

on Friday 10 am
registration via seminar bazaar

introduction on Friday, November 10th, 2023 at 10 am, Gallery Parkhaus (room 177)

submission on February 9th, 2024

Prof. Katharina Immekus
M. A. Kai Ruhland

The magazine seminar is to go into the 3rd round this winter. In the spirit of the previous magazine seminars, ideas are to be given a platform and grow in discussion with others. The participants of the magazine seminar organize themselves independently, form the editorial team together and develop formats, design ideas and topics in discussion with each other. Thus, the magazine should remain a place where political, emotional, important or simply entertaining topics that seem relevant to architecture students are given a space.

Magazines are published periodically and evolve over time. Thus, a new group of students is called upon to engage with magazines, to question what has emerged and to continue it. The students will analyze different magazines, discuss the magazine as a platform, salesroom as well as ideas in the context of their academic studies and realize the 3rd issue of Blaupause.

With six lectures and three optional exercises, subject module B gives Master's students an overview of the contents of visual, digital and plastic design.

While the focus in the seminars of the respective subject areas is on concrete topics and techniques of design, the lectures of the subject module are designed to establish a larger context and thus to present and clarify the interests of the individual subject areas in the context of architectural teaching.

Within this subject module, Visual Design will give a lecture on free art and intuitive perception as well as a lecture on “the applied image”. Plastic Design will hold a lecture on “Design at the interface from two- to three-dimensional space” as well as a lecture on “Experimental design in 1:1 at the interface to applied research”. Digital Design will hold lectures on “Computer-based design and digital fabrication”.

Exercises will develop from the resulting differences and interfaces of approach and will be issued at the end of the lecture series.

»Parkhaus Music-Club«

The interest and the music archive of Galerie Parkhaus is large and has grown steadily over the years.

This winter term, we would like to start listening to music together once a month in the Parkhaus Gallery, focusing on a different country each evening.

We would like to start the music club series on November 7, 2023, with Iran.

Katharina Immekus will play a few musical gems from her collection and tell us, how she came across them.

There are no CPs for participating in the evenings, it's all about a shared interest in the different cultures and music of these countries. You must bring your own food and drinks, preferably appropriate to the respective country.
