»Drawing I« teaches the perception, understanding and graphic representation of architectural and spatial contexts. In weekly exercises, students translate their perceptions into analogue freehand drawings in the faculty or directly in the urban space. Accompanying the exercises, theoretical and practical aspects of freehand drawing such as perspective, proportions, incidence of light, surface texture and composition are taught.
Participation in the exercises and submission of the winter semester exercises on February 10th, 2025
- Successful completion of the sub-modules in the winter and summer semesters is a prerequisite for passing the overall module 15-21-0413 Design I – Drawing –

In winter term 2024, we would like to venture into the world of amusement parks with the linocut seminar. There are many graphically attractive carousels and micro-architectures on the grounds of these parks. We want to approach these objects and their surroundings visually and take a closer look at the bizarre nature of these places. In doing so, we want to focus in particular on the scale of the buildings and kiosks and get to the bottom of the special meaning of fun and leisure that is conveyed here. As usual, we will look for suitable motifs or design them ourselves and then translate them onto lino plates of different sizes, which we will print together in the print workshop and discuss afterwards.
In conjunction with the results of the picture seminar, there may also be another exhibition in the Parkhaus gallery at the end of the semester.
Gallery Seminar »The effect of different exhibition spaces«

There are a multitude of possibilities for how and where “things” can be exhibited.
For example, in built space, in public space and even digital space is no longer foreign territory, at least since Corona. Furthermore, the book is also seen as a space for exhibitions.
The possibilities and limits that arise depend on what is shown and must be considered individually. Even a “neutral” white cube is ultimately not completely neutral. The surroundings always have an impact on what is shown and its own effect – an atmosphere.
In the gallery seminar, we would like to look at, discuss and debate different forms, types and locations of exhibitions. To this end, we will visit different institutions. In addition, some exhibitions will be planned and set up in the Parkhaus gallery, thus contextualizing the seminar topic with practical examples.
»Painting«

Master/Bachelor WF
on Tuesday 10 am
registration via seminar bazaar
introduction on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024 at 10 am, Kleiner Zeichensaal (room 111)
submission on February 11th, 2025
Prof. Katharina Immekus
The blue, framed, usually moving surface that reflects the sky has long been a favourite motif of many painters. There are famous examples in films too, in which everything important takes place around the pool. The blue square of water is the archetype of summer, it means the longed-for cooling off after lazily lying around in the sun. The outdoor pool – as a place of short holidays – is the perfect starting motif for the first thematic painting seminar. We can use it to try out the different blues and greens, talk about composition and explore the various techniques and possibilities of a painting’s surface together. We will look at paintings in the books at the subject’s library and take inspiration from them and other contemporary painters and try to create our own version of the pool in painting.

Clay is a natural occurrence and consists largely of inorganic material, mainly clay minerals.
A stone is a compact object made of minerals or rock.
In ceramics terminology, the fired mixture of various minerals and admixtures in the production of ceramic products or ceramic bodies is referred to as the body.
The Material and Nature seminar focuses on the free and individual analysis of materials. It is primarily an examination of the appearance of materials in built space.
Using artistic approaches, we will analyze materials and formulate experimental forms of representation. This examination is intended to support creative thought processes and promote our own temporal form of expression. In addition, texts by Peter Zumthor and Gernot Böhme will be discussed and an essay will be written.

With six lectures and three optional exercises, subject module B gives Master's students an overview of the contents of visual, digital and plastic design.
While the focus in the seminars of the respective subject areas is on concrete topics and techniques of design, the lectures of the subject module are designed to establish a larger context and thus to present and clarify the interests of the individual subject areas in the context of architectural teaching.
Within this subject module, Visual Design will give a lecture on free art and intuitive perception as well as a lecture on “the applied image”. Plastic Design will hold a lecture on “Design at the interface from two- to three-dimensional space” as well as a lecture on “Experimental design in 1:1 at the interface to applied research”. Digital Design will hold lectures on “Computer-based design and digital fabrication”.
Exercises will develop from the resulting differences and interfaces of approach and will be issued at the end of the lecture series.
»Funfair, Village Feast and Small Fair«

Funfairs and small fairs have a long tradition as places of longing of a special kind. They are associated with meeting and hanging out with friends at the merry-go-rounds, repetitive music and the nasal announcements of the showmen. But lots of colour, candy floss, glazed apples and exaggerated backdrops, too. In terms of motifs, these places are ideal for analogue representation by means of collage, coloured pencil drawing or painting. In the seminar, we want to expose ourselves to the extreme and try out different forms of aesthetics on a pictorial level. Together with the results of the linocut seminar, we will develop a joint exhibition for the Parkhaus Gallery.
